Martins Luters sludina ticīgajiem 1561
This is a painting entitled “Martin Luther Preaching to the Faithful” ca. 1561, fifteen years after Luther’s call to the Church Triumphant. This painting is instructive for those who argue that 21st century Lutherans who cling to the historic liturgy and worship practices are introducing Roman Catholic practices that Luther and the Reformation Fathers abandoned.
1. The crucifix (not a naked cross) hangs over the Lutheran Church’s altar.
2. An infant is baptized according to the agenda.
3. The sermon is preached in the pulpit from the Bible.
4. Vestments are used in Divine Service, including the alb, chasuble, cassock and surplice for Holy Eucharist (Communion).
5. We use the common chalice (not individual cups).
6. We kneel to receive the Lord’s body and blood.
7. The host is received directly in the mouth, not in the hand.
